EXPLANATION OF QUIZ RESULTS

Revenge means punishing the people who hurt you. Wanting revenge is natural. Neuroscience studies show that thinking about or seeking revenge feels pleasurable and rewarding, and between 50% and 90% of people recall experiencing recent revenge desires. However, some people think about or seek revenge in ways that are harmful to themselves or others and have difficulty controlling it despite the negative consequences. It may even become an addiction. This quiz is based on the proposed criteria for assessing "Revenge Use Disorder" (revenge addition) in The Science of Revenge: Understanding the World's Deadliest Addiction--and How to Overcome It by James Kimmel, Jr., JD.

  • If your revenge score is below 20, your risk of revenge addiction is LOW

  • If your revenge score is between 20-30, your risk of revenge addiction is MODERATE

  • If your revenge score is between 40-50, your risk of revenge addiction is ELEVATED

  • If your revenge score is 60 or more, your risk of revenge addiction is HIGH

The higher your risk of revenge addiction, the more you might want to consider doing something to lower your risk and keep yourself and others safe. Neuroscience research shows that practicing forgiveness inside your mind when you've been hurt reduces both the psychological pain of grievances and accompanying revenge cravings. So, when you forgive, the gift you "give" is to yourself, the victim, not the person who hurt you--who doesn't even need to know that you've forgiven them. You can learn more about revenge, forgiveness and how to lower your risks in The Science of Revenge. You can also try a free method of putting those who hurt you on trial inside a courtroom of your mind while exploring what it might feel like to forgive them by using the Miracle Court App.
